Yeung’s CMP capstone video focuses on Mingsha Mountain in Dunhuang, a historic oasis town in northwestern China, famous for its UNESCO-recognized Buddhist grotto shrines dating from the 5th century onwards. Every day busloads of tourists from around the world arrive to ride camels, sand bikes, sliders and even airplanes on a nearby historic sand dune, while masked-off staff toil in the scorching sun and occasional sandstorm. This bizarre and often comical spectacle of Silk Road romance is interspersed with moments of supreme natural beauty, perhaps not completely alienated from history.
