PhD Dissertation Title: Becoming Euro-Mediterranean: Reframing Urban Space and Identity in Southern France
Capstone Project: Lampedusa
Philip Cartelli received a joint-PhD in Media Anthropology with a secondary field in Critical Media Practice at Harvard University and in Sociology at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris) in May 2016. His dissertation explored how the effects of physical changes in infrastructure interacted with cultural programming and rhetoric in a multi-faceted urban redevelopment project in Marseille, France. His CMP Capstone Project was a short film entitled “Lampedusa” (co-directed with Mariangela Ciccarello), which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and has gone on to screen at a dozen festivals and venues worldwide, including The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Torino Film Festival. “Lampedusa” was also awarded the Best Short Film Award at the Subversive Film Festival (Croatia). His final medium-length film project in the Sensory Ethnography Lab, “Promenade,” will appear in installation form at the FID-Marseille festival in July 2016. Cartelli is currently at work on two projects, one with his ongoing collaborator Ciccarello in the Bay of Naples, and another that is based between the Rhone River’s source in the Swiss Alps and its delta on the French Mediterranean coast. He is a “jeune docteur” affiliate of the Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire sur des enjeux sociaux at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales.
