Kaaran Kavan Abol (Creator, Why are You Silent?)
Brandon Evans, PhD in Film and Visual Studies

“Kaaran Kavan Abol (Creator, Why are You Silent?)” is a series of contemporary wordless kirtan (devotional music) inspired by melodies from Sikh traditions. The wordlessness of this kirtan, a genre typically marked by the presence of the word as mantra, as well as its unusual instrumentation—electric guitar and lap steel— are seen as ways of interrogating the pasts and futures of vernacular Sikh musical and sonic aesthetics.
