Pauline Shongov is an artist and PhD student in the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies, where she is also a Harvard Presidential Scholar. Through archival studies and oral history, her research includes an affective approach to urban ruination and maintenance as forms of historical excavation and active care. Her practice engages with the possibilities that hybrid-documentary film bring to imaging Eastern European landscapes and their diasporic communities at large, as well as the ways through which visibility and visuality can be re-imagined through ethnographic work. By engaging conditions of site, architectural opacity, and environmental precarity, her research centers material histories within archeological methodologies of media and landscape theory.
